Picnic area near Speech House, Forest of Dean
Turn in at the sign for Cyril Hart Arboretum. The fallen tree was very popular. One of the free range lambs had managed to climb on top and was nibbling at the vegetation, and eight types of bird visited during the short time I was there, including a pair of nuthatches.

A lamb on a log, Forest of Dean
I was tempted to call this 'A log of lamb'. Its mother was content to eat the grass on the ground behind the log, but something edible attracted this young free range lamb onto the top. Taken at the picnic area near the Cyril Hart Arboretum.

Female Great spotted woodpecker
Dendrocopos major - taking advantage of food scattered on a fallen log and returning to the nest with overflowing beak, time after time. At this point, a squirrel appeared and distracted her from the task.

Grey squirrel feeding on a fallen tree
People spread food along this log to watch the birds and squirrels. They cope better than the native red squirrel with cold winters such as the one just gone as they are larger and store more fat. Greys carry a virus known as squirrelpox, which is harmless in greys, but deadly for red squirrels. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7025918.stm
