In the Rose Garden, Hill House
The Rose Garden was situated unusually near to the servant's quarters. This arose as a result of a recommendation by Mackintosh. Many of the varieties grown are old species. The perfumes are 'heady' - amazing!

Herbaceous borders at Hill House
Mackintosh did not have much to do with the garden design at Hill House. Most of this was left to a keen and knowledgeable gardener called Walter Blackie.
When the National Trust acquired the house in 1982, much of the garden was overgrown, and a gradual programme of restoration was initiated.

Garden Hill House
Many of the plants available at the turn of the twentieth century, and a style of plant labelling consistent with that period, has helped the National Trust to return the garden to its former self.

Hill House garden
To the eastern side of the garden is an area restored for wild flowers. There are ox-eye daisies, ragged robin,wild orchids and red campion, to name but a few. Placed right in the centre is a beautiful garden seat.

Hill House inside its box, Helensburgh
The industrial-scale temporary 'box' encloses Hill House to protect it from direct impact of rainfall while allowing the air to circulate, and was built in 2019. Cement render applied when the house was completed in 1904 has trapped water in the walls, unlike the traditional lime roughcast that can breathe. While the house is drying out, long-term remedies will be investigated.

Sculpture at Hill House
A recent addition has been a "mobile" sculpture, reminiscent of a wild windmill, which turns and twists in the wind. Its title is "Five Rectangles in Space" (echoing the rectangular windows of the building) and it was made by the sculptor George Ricky.
