Castle Street, Dumbarton
Part of the Denny Tank Museum is on the left. Compare a view in the opposite direction, looking back towards this point: Image In that picture, a section of road (then only recently built) curves to the left, but the street carries on directly ahead, to end at the point from which the present photograph was taken. The steeple directly ahead is that of Dumbarton Parish Church (compare Image, taken from further ahead). The crane on the right is on the former site of the Burgh Hall: Image

William Froude memorial on facade of museum
The Denny Tank Museum (as it is invariably known locally) is the Dumbarton outpost of the Scottish Maritime Museum. High on its wall on Castle Street is this sculpted memorial to William Froude; his Admiralty Tank in Torquay inspired the experimental ship testing tank (the Denny Tank) that is housed in this museum, and which is still in use at the present day.

The Denny Tank Museum
I know this building as the Denny Tank Museum, which is its invariable local name (after Image), but those from outwith the area will know it as the Dumbarton branch of the Scottish Maritime Museum; it is the latter name that appears on signs outside (and on) the building. My picture shows the building just after a recent revamp; by way of comparison, Image shows the same building before that work was carried out. The museum is located at the eastern end of Image In both pictures, Image is visible on the right. In the present photograph, the more distant brick tower on the left is the Image The tower of the old burgh hall is visible to the right of the museum.
