Bostock gravestone, New Kilpatrick Cemetery

WHO DIED 17TH SEPT 1940 IN HIS 82ND YEAR THEIR ELDEST SON EDWARD HENRY AUGUSTUS BOSTOCK WHO DIED 5TH AUGUST 1943 IN HIS 62ND YEAR DEARLY BELOVED HUSBAND OF ELIZABETH LITTLE SOMMERVILLE ALSO THE ABOVE ELIZABETH LITTLE SOMMERVILLE WHO DIED 14TH DECEMBER 1964 IN HER 74TH YEAR Edward Henry Bostock was born into a family of circus and menagerie owners. They toured the country putting on performances of Bostock and Wombwell's Menagerie in towns and cities on their route. In 1897 Bostock finally settled in Glasgow, where he set up the Scottish Zoo and Variety Circus, and Glasgow Hippodrome. In due course he was elected a member of Glasgow Council and became a Justice of the Peace. His 1928 autobiography 'Menageries, Circuses and Theatres' is worth a read if you can get hold of a copy. There is also a lot of information at http://www.arthurlloyd.co.uk/Glasgow/ScottishZooAndHippodrome.htm. Many of the animals at the zoo were presented to the Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow when they died. The best known of these is Sir Roger, the Asian elephant http://collections.glasgowmuseums.com/mwebcgi/mweb?request=record;id=326700;type=102.

New Kilpatrick Cemetery
The white house in the right background was originally the cemetery lodge, but it is now (as a sign in front of the house reminds people) a private residence, unconnected with the cemetery. The tall white structure just ahead, to the left, is the Galloway Memorial.

New Kilpatrick Cemetery: base of the Antonine Wall
This is the more easterly of the two preserved sections of the stone base of the Antonine Wall that are on view in New Kilpatrick Cemetery. For the westerly one, see Image, and other images that are linked from there. As for this eastern section, it is almost 30 metres long; as the picture shows, there is a distinct kerb on each side. Compare Image, a view from a different angle, highlighting the southern curbstones. For a view from the other end, see Image Like the other section, this easterly one is crossed obliquely by an original culvert, whose remains are visible: Image The wall that can be seen not far ahead in the present picture is the eastern boundary of the cemetery; there is a golf course on the other side. The cross to the right of the Wall's base is the Cuthbert Memorial. Beyond that is a table stone commemorating Sir Archibald Spencer Lindsey Campbell, the Fifth Baronet of Succoth, and his wife. For another contributor's earlier picture of the Wall's stone base, from this end, see Image

The present view is from the cemetery's eastern boundary wall. This is one of the two exposed sections of the Wall's base that are on view in the cemetery; for the other, see Image

Part of the Antonine Wall
An image to replicate the first submitted for this square in 2005 Image This is one of two short sections of the Antonine Wall visible within New Kilpatrick Cemetery. Both are Scheduled Monuments http://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/SM7341 and part of the Antonine Wall World Heritage Site https://www.historicenvironment.scot/advice-and-support/listing-scheduling-and-designations/world-heritage-sites/antonine-wall/. The remains of the stone base of the rampart are well preserved and show various distinctive features of construction. The cemetery, which was opened in 1903, has been built over the rest of the Wall at this point. The site is currently getting rather overgrown.
