Castle gate?
Glasgow's Royal Infirmary was built on the site of Glasgow Castle, which was left in ruins after the Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century. The ruins themselves were then demolished in 1791 to make way for the hospital, but was this gate perhaps left intact as a shrine to the lost history of the Bishop's Castle? It certainly looks rather fancy and fortified for a hospital gate....

Lister at Glasgow Royal Infirmary
Almost hidden from public view, behind the mobile MRI scanner unit.
Joseph Lister was born in Upton Essex and became a professor of surgery at "The Royal" in 1860. Responsible for the new surgery block, Lister noted that about half of his patients died from sepsis. He experimented to find ways to prevent sepsis, experimentation which lead to his using carbolic acid (now known as phenol) to clean instruments and hands before and after surgery. These experiments were influenced by Louis Pasteur's paper on rotting and fermentation caused by micro-organisms. Lister's methods were picked up around the world and as a result is considered "the father of modern antisepsis".

The word edifice springs to mind when looking at this magnificent building which was designed by James Miller at around the same time he was working on the Glasgow Central Station extension.
