Glasgow's Royal Infirmary was built on the site of Glasgow Castle, which was left in ruins after the Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century. The ruins themselves were then demolished in 1791 to make way for the hospital, but was this gate perhaps left intact as a shrine to the lost history of the Bishop's Castle? It certainly looks rather fancy and fortified for a hospital gate....
