Ex-Caledonian 2P 0-4-4T No. 55178 rests with many other engines on a Sunday at Balornock (St Rollox) Locomotive Depot in 1948.

A Sunday scene, when most of the Depots 75 or so locomotives were "at home". This was the Caledonian Railway's principal depot for services from Glasgow Buchanan Street, all closed some 50 years ago. The allocation in 1950 comprised:- 33 4-6-0, 5 4-4-0, 1 2-6-0, 27 0-6-0, 7 0-6-0T and 3 0-4-4T.

The motorway curves under the Cumbernauld railway line near Provan gas works, part of which can be seen in the lower right corner.

Out in the yard beside another 'Black 5' is No. 5154 'Lanarkshire Yeomanry' still in LMS livery (built 1935, named 1937, withdrawn 11/66). It was one of only five of the Class of 842 locomotive given a name by the LMS or BR: six others have been named in preservation, however.

The CR McIntosh '782' class 0-6-0T were introduced in 1896; No. 16289 (later BR No. 56289) lasted until 10/60.

View NE, towards Larbert, Stirling, Perth etc.: ex-Caledonian main line from Glasgow Buchanan Street, taken at the same time as Image Ex-WD 2-8-0 No. 90493 was built as No. 8708 (78708) in 8/44, stored at Longmoor before being shipped to France in 11/44, used by the US Army from 2/45 and returning to England in 12/45 and allocated to St Margarets LNER. It was one of the 200 purchased by the LNER, becoming O7 No. 3172 (63172). It remained in Scotland under BR(ScR), becoming 90493 and was withdrawn in 2/66. The shining new 350hp Diesel-electric 0-6-0 is No. D4098, which became Class 08 No. 08884. It was preserved and in 2/08 was seen at Bescot - unnamed, but may have been named 'Venus' at one time.

The locomotive is Pickersgill '300' class 3F 0-6-0 No. 57686 (built c. 1919, withdrawn 3/62).

View eastward from Broomfield Road Bridge over the main line from Buchanan Street. Balornock was the main passenger and freight Locomotive Depot (coded 31A by the LMSR, then 65B by BR) for the ex-Caledonian main lines northwards from Glasgow; it also handled new and repaired engines from St Rollox Works nearby. The allocation at the time of the photograph (1961) included a few Diesels and would have been a little less than that of 1954, namely 74 comprising:- 32 4-6-0s, 5 4-4-0s, 1 2-6-0, 24 0-6-0s, 2 2-6-4Ts, 8 0-6-0Ts and 2 0-4-4Ts. The Depot closed on 7/11/66, when Buchanan Street terminus and the whole main line out to Sighthill East Junction was closed - and all traces of the Railway in this scene have long since disappeared. Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 No. 44922 heads the queue and No. 45360 is alone on the next line (with more engines in the distance); the second engine is LNE A2 4-6-2 60527 'Sun Chariot' (which had worked in from Dundee), then LMS 4F 0-6-0 No. 44312 and an unidentified ex-CR 0-6-0.

Looking out of Robroyston Park over the houses on Quarrywood Road towards the famous flats on Red Road. This skyline is doomed as the high rise buildings are being demolished.
