Queen's Terrace, Fleetwood
Overlooking the River Wyre. Dating from 1844, the terrace gives the impression of being of military origins. That is apparently not the case, just that the architect, Decimus Burton, had grand design ideas!

Fleetwood 3rd railway station (site), Lancashire
Opened in 1883 by the Preston & Wyre Joint Railway (joint between the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway and the London & North Western Railway), this station replaced an earlier one several hundred metres further from the camera position. It closed in 1966 and the site was redeveloped for loading road vehicles onto ferries.
View south east at the site of the old frontage. No trace remains. The station can be seen from a similar angle on

Fleetwood Ferry tram terminus, Lancashire - August, 1959
Redolent of the era is this 1959 view. In the distance, a 'Coronation' class tram is just departing for Blackpool, while two 'Balloon' class double-deck cars will form the next departures, and 'Pantograph' car 169 waits on the lay-by. In the background, the building is Fleetwood railway station, an early Beeching casualty, and a 'Morris 8' motor car is parked at the side of the road.

A 'Pantograph' car at Fleetwood Ferry
Car 169 is one of a batch of eight cars introduced in 1930 which were used on the North Station to Fleetwood route only. They could not run elsewhere, as they had fixed-head trolleys. The '1' displayed in the side indicator box is not a route number but is an historical survival of an earlier practice whereby North Station cars charged a minimum fare of only 1d. while on Promenade cars it was 2d. These figures applied for the whole route.

Queens Terrace. Fleetwood
This beautifully conserved Georgian terrace is to be found on the front at Fleetwood next to the ferry. Right next to it - or behind it - is the Pharos Lighthouse, also constructed from sandstone, and which was sited to line up with the Beach Lighthouse just metres away to the west to enable mariners and fishermen to find safe passage through the sandbanks.
