Tombs under a chestnut tree
The churchyard at St Chad's was closed for burials in 1833. In 1973 most of the graveyard was levelled and many of the stones set into the ground as paving slabs. Just a small number of table tombs and memorials were left. The memorial on the right is to John Bowman who was the first secretary to the Fylde Temperance Union who died April 6th 1867, aged 25 years. The table tomb on the left, in memory of William Ellet, is festooned with fallen chestnuts. In the background is the door into the Clergy Vestry. The paths on the left lead down to the Market Place.

Fleetwood Family Vault
The doorway leads down to the Fleetwood family vault. Over the door are two carved scrolls and the inscription "Insignia Rici Fleetwood An Hujus Ecciffe Patronis Anno Dni 1699" - The arms of Richard Fleetwood Esq patron of this church Anno Domini 1699. The arms can no longer be seen in the stonework but the Fleetwod family arms feature in the lead rainwater heads along the nave wall. About eighteen members of the family are buried in the underground brick lined vault.
