The Wave, Church Street, Blackpool
This striking installation is made from stainless steel with resin inserts and internal lighting. The figure is also made of resin and represents a surfer. The design of the work is inspired in part by the nearby Church of St John and the Winter Gardens. The sculptor is Lucy Glendinning. The large blue pebbles help to protect the main structure from traffic but can also be used as seats. They are the work of Lucy and also Mark Merer. Information from Lucy's website http://www.lucyglendinning.com/work/commissions/the_wave.html

Closeup, artwork, Church Street, Blackpool
The curves in the installation seen here http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3679404 have the effect of distorting reflections, which can be quite disconcerting.

The Wave
The Wave by Lucy Glendinning in collaboration with Mark Merer was installed in Cedar Square, Blackpool in September 2009. It is a mirror polished stainless steel wave shape with intelligent internal lighting, a laser cut pattern with transparent blue resin insets and a figure cast in crystal clear blue resin which dives from the wave.
Around the base are clear cut blue pebbles which act as seats and protection from traffic, although the area is now mostly traffic free.
