The Portcullis, Castle Wynd, Stirling
This Category B listed building was a flourishing school under Dr. David Doig and this building was built by Gideon Gray in 1787-8 possibly incorporating parts of the previous Grammar School of around 1470 where reputedly James VI was educated. When, for the second time in 1856, larger premises were required the school moved down the road and the building was used by the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders as a Military Store when the Army was based at Stirling Castle. In subsequent years, after the army left the Castle, the property became a Hotel.

Argyll's Lodging, Castle Wynd
A splendid town-house which was the Stirling residence of the 9th earl of Argyll in the 17th century. It is described by the Royal Commission as “the most important surviving town-house of its period in Scotland”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argyll's_Lodging

Argyll's Lodgings
A small 16C merchants house expanded first by William Alexander [Earl of Stirling] in the 1630s and then by the Earl of Argyll when he acquired it in the 1660s. Now looked after by Historic Scotland, and beautifully restored and well worth a visit.

Doorway detail at Argyll's Lodging
The middle wing, with the arms and date stone of the extension built by Sir William Alexander. In 1633 he became the Earl of Stirling, and before that had a successful political career, including the founding of Nova Scotia in Canada. Less successful financially he died bankrupt in 1640.
