This Category B listed building was a flourishing school under Dr. David Doig and this building was built by Gideon Gray in 1787-8 possibly incorporating parts of the previous Grammar School of around 1470 where reputedly James VI was educated. When, for the second time in 1856, larger premises were required the school moved down the road and the building was used by the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders as a Military Store when the Army was based at Stirling Castle. In subsequent years, after the army left the Castle, the property became a Hotel.
