83-84 Queen Street, Exeter
A luscious confection dated 1849, built, surprisingly, as a post office. Grade II listed.
Now shops, the spaces here occupied by Boston Tea Party (cafe) and Toni & Guy (hairdresser).

Queen's Chambers, Exeter, seen from the Guildhall shopping centre
Queen's Chambers was built in the late 1840s, to designs by the local builder William Hooper, as Exeter's first purpose-built post office. http://www.exetermemories.co.uk/em/_buildings/queens-chambers.php It was constructed on Queen Street, which had itself only recently been laid out, in 1839-41. It stood opposite the Higher Market, designed by Dymond & Fowler, with its facade of Doric columns, which frame this photo; the Guildhall shopping centre now occupies the site. http://www.exetermemories.co.uk/em/_streets/queensstreet.php

Staircase on Queen's Walk, Exeter
Cherry & Pevsner make special reference to this little feature in Queen's Walk, a passage between Gandy Street and Queen Street - "a delightful exterior stair with a cast-iron railing ending in a confident flourish". The Cavern Club has a reputation for promoting indie and post-punk bands, and boasts an impressive list of appearances including local heroes Coldplay.

Another view along
Image Spot the difference. Lamps matching those in the ceiling have replaced the old lamp fitting. Elegant though these are, I preferred the previous view.
