Queen's Chambers was built in the late 1840s, to designs by the local builder William Hooper, as Exeter's first purpose-built post office. http://www.exetermemories.co.uk/em/_buildings/queens-chambers.php It was constructed on Queen Street, which had itself only recently been laid out, in 1839-41. It stood opposite the Higher Market, designed by Dymond & Fowler, with its facade of Doric columns, which frame this photo; the Guildhall shopping centre now occupies the site. http://www.exetermemories.co.uk/em/_streets/queensstreet.php
