Still standing, but elsewhere
The Long Stone at the junction of Under Minnow Road and Bellaire, on the outskirts of Barnstaple, is an ancient standing stone. It's age is difficult to pin down but it may be prehistoric. However, it has had a little wander since it was first erected. Some records suggest it fell over in the nineteenth century and was repositioned seventeen feet from the original spot by Mr Lee of Broadgate House in a walled garden. It was repositioned again in 1967 when road works were carried out. It now has its own small garden which shows it off nicely.

A magic hole?
The Long Stone in Pilton has been here or hereabouts for centuries, if not millennia. Its use or significance has been shrouded in the mists of time, but the hole in the middle may be key. There are other such stone with holes in spread around the country so may be part of that lost culture.

Pilton Long Stone
Looking westwards along Under Minnow Road, the Long Stone has been given a small, public garden area of its own, having once been part of Broadgate House. Quarried from local limestone, it is Grade II listed.
