Cullompton: by Longlands Lane
Old burgage plots about to be developed by Millwood Homes (Devon) Ltd for housing, but being initially investigated by South West Archaeology. An open day was held on 12 December 2009, after significant finds of pottery were made, including fragments of Samian ware, an almost complete funery urn and part of a quernstone. The site lies to the south of Roman forts discovered about a decade earlier on St Andrew’s Hill. Here members of the public quiz site director Dr Brynmor Morris (in high-vis jacket). Finds may date to the early third century AD, suggesting Roman occupation continued after the army departed to Wales circa 70AD
