London Overground train at Cheshunt station
The recent acquisition by the Overground of the ex-Great Eastern branches to Chingford, Cheshunt and Enfield Town means that London Freedom Pass holders can now travel to these destinations free of charge. However, you must always travel on an Overground train: the pass is not valid on Abellio services. The same applies at Shenfield, where the TfL service is not part of the Overground, but is branded as 'TfL Rail', and will eventually become part of Crossrail.

View southward, towards London on the Lee Valley main line: ex-GER Liverpool Street - Bishop's Stortford - Cambridge etc. main line. Electrification in 11/60 included resurrection of the Churchbury Loop from Edmonton Green, which joined here in the right distance.

Cheshunt station
The railway line from Stratford to Broxbourne via Waltham Cross was opened by the Northern & Eastern Railway on 15th September 1840. Cheshunt station on this line was opened by the Eastern Counties Railway on 31st May 1846.
A further line to Cheshunt was opened on 1st October 1891 for passenger and freight working. This branched off the existing line to Enfield Town to the north of Lower Edmonton (now Edmonton Green) station to join the older line at Cheshunt.
The lines from Hackney Downs to Bishop's Stortford and Hertford East, including those through Cheshunt station, were electrified on 21st November 1960. The lines south from Cheshunt via Tottenham Hale were not electrified until 5th May 1969.
London Overground took over the route to Cheshunt via White Hart Lane in May 2015. In this view a terminating London Overground train is on the left while on the right are the stopping lines for trains from beyond Cheshunt as well as fast trains to Cambridge and Stansted Airport.

Abellio train at Cheshunt station
Abellio services from Hertford East and Cambridge often stop at Cheshunt, as with 317 881 here. They provide a much faster service to Liverpool Street than do the Overground trains, running direct rather than via the Turkey Street loop used by the Overground. But your Freedom Pass is not valid on Abellio here, so you risk a fine if you try to use it.
