Hadley Highstone
A monument to the Battle of Barnet, 1471, which took place some way south of here. The stone was moved here in about 1840 from a location a good deal closer to the battle site, where it had been erected in 1740.

Monken Hadley: Hadley Highstone
The Hadley Highstone obelisk is at the junction of the Great North Road leading towards Hatfield and the old road (Kitts End Road) from Barnet to St Albans, and commemorates the Battle of Barnet on the misty Easter Sunday of 14 April 1471, when King Edward IV defeated his erstwhile mentor Richard Neville, the Earl of Warwick, the Kingmaker, who was killed during the battle. The actual site of the battle is some 300 metres south-east of this location. The obelisk was erected in 1740 by Sir Jeremy Sambrook, although it was originally placed some 200 metres further south, only being moved here in 1840.
