Gentlemanly Housing
This is along Enfield's showpiece Gentleman's Row, a remarkable survival of pre-suburban housing near the town centre. No doubt there is a lot of interesting information available about this area, but unfortunately Googling "Gentlemans Row Enfield" gets you pages of estate agent house price rubbish first off. Apologies for laziness.

House in Gentleman's Row, Enfield
The same building was photographed later by Marathon. Image] He commented "Most of Enfield’s older buildings were demolished at the end of the 19th century and the centre began to take on its present streetscape. Of the properties that survive, the finest group is the collection of Georgian and early Victorian houses in Gentleman’s Row. There is a wide path separating the houses from their gardens. This allowed coaches to drop their occupants outside their houses The most famous inhabitant of Gentleman's Row was Charles Lamb. Both he and his sister Mary frequently visited a friend in Enfield and stayed at Elm House. Charles Lamb then took up residence at Clarendon Cottage. The whole of Gentleman's Row still stands today and is the highlight of the Enfield Town conservation area."

This part of Enfield has remained unchanged and it is only the television aerials giving a modern touch to this unspoilt area.

View towards houses in Gentleman's Row
The strip of land between the roadway and the houses is divided up between the properties, each being allotted a sizeable - but detached - front garden. Sadly, some now serve as parking spaces. The plots are 'detached' in the sense that between them and the houses runs a public pathway: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3357250
