Plaque on Barclays Bank, Church Street, Enfield
This plaque in the front wall of Barclays Bank to the left of the entrance marks the place where the world's first cash dispenser was installed on 27 June 1967. This plaque was given in commemoration by the London Borough of Enfield, The Worshipful the Mayor of Enfield Councillar Doreen Mardon on 26 June 1992 to mark the 25th Anniversary of this event which changed the world of banking for ever. The original plaque which was there for many years stated that it had been unveiled by Reg Varney of "On the Buses" fame. Few people now have probably heard of him, but I feel it is a shame that the original plaque was removed to be replaced by a bronze one which was subsequently stolen before being replaced by the plaque in this listing.
