Raised Bank on Murieston Water
The picture was taken looking upstream roughly halfway between the A71 bridge/culvert and Williamston Bridge. A decent path leads between both crossings and wherever it veers away slightly from the water fainter muddier paths appear taking you closer to the bank.
The woodland straddling the burn is known as Manse Covert, a name that often still appears on maps. A manse, as most people know, is the house provided for a minister of a church, though looking at old maps it seems this minister actually got a whole farm for his duties! The 'Covert' bit of the name refers to woodland designed for game to live in. It does seem odd looked at through modern eyes, but religious men obviously used to like a bit of 'sport', blasting birds out of the sky and firing at animals in the woods!

The River Almond from the air
The Almond is on the left and can be seen heading towards the west end of Edinburgh Airport runway, from where the photographer has recently taken off on a commercial flight to Prague. The courses of Murrieston Water and Linhouse Water can also be seen in the right foreground.

Old milestone
The milestone on Beresford Rise in Dedridge near to the A71 has been moved away from the hedge and set into its own paved area. This style of milestone was set up by the Calder District Turnpike Trust. The original legend, probably painted on, would have been Edinburgh 13 Carnwath 15.

Shop, Beresford Rise
The name is modern Livingston, but the row of cottages once stood on a country lane. The buildings are not present on a 1893 map.

Lizzie Brice's roundabout
Livvy landmark, taken while buying petrol for the orienteering generator. The sport is now computerised, with timing done by computers, and even in some cases maps printed on site. The processing power needs electricity.
