A899 Bridge
The bridge is obviously a moern one, replacing the original bridge over the canal at this point. It would have become inadequate for the volume of traffic, because this was the main A8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh before first the A89 Broxburn Bypass and later the M8 were built.

Union Canal and A899 Bridge
The bridge replaced the original canal bridge, which proved inadequate for the volume of traffic when the main street of Broxburn was part of the main road between Glasgow and Edinburgh. First a bypass, and later the M8 motorway, have relieved the town of through traffic. Note the thin skin of ice on the surface of the canal; it was a very cold morning.

Port Buchan
The ugly black structure is a portacabin containing toilets. It is to be hoped that it is as jerry-built as it is unsightly, so that it won't be too long before Scottish Waterways is obliged to take the opportunity to replace it with something more aesthetic. And it wasn't even open!
