The bridge replaced the original canal bridge, which proved inadequate for the volume of traffic when the main street of Broxburn was part of the main road between Glasgow and Edinburgh. First a bypass, and later the M8 motorway, have relieved the town of through traffic. Note the thin skin of ice on the surface of the canal; it was a very cold morning.
