The white van is turning into Greendykes Road. This is the point at which East Main Street, in which I am standing, becomes West Main Street, west of the traffic lights. There is a spot height mapped here, 69 metres above sea level.

Not a listed building, but on the Buildings at Risk Register, no doubt as it is at the Easternmost end of the Broxburn conservation area. Is just noted as a 20th century building, and has been unoccupied since at least 2008. As it is a night-time picture the unusual stained glass windows above the balcony can only just be made out. The official name of the lodge is Lodge Buchan St. John 636, and though the picture doesn't show it, this is inscribed in relief above the doorway. Formed in 1879, they are still going but have seemingly moved to the premises of a nearby bowling club. According to the internet there are currently 647 freemason lodges operating in Scotland, meaning there is approximately one per 8000 population. So still pretty popular it seems.

These two portraits are on the wall of 79 East Main St, Broxburn. I thought they were plastic but according to a pdf file about publicly-funded art works in Broxburn and neighbouring Uphall, they are made from dibond - this is a fairly thick plastic sheet with a very thin outer coating of aluminium on each side. They've been up since 2010 and are part of a series by Mike Inglis, and according to the blurb are designed to depict the importance of brass bands in both towns' histories.

Concrete blocks don't come much more unsightly than these. Tired-looking concrete finish, stark shapes, apparent absence of a roof and ill-proportioned windows give the whole thing a very unappealing aspect. At least the window frames all still match, more or less. The green railings in the foreground prevent access to the Brox Burn.

This is actually signposted as Greendykes Road Car Park, though the map suggests it is or perhaps was Bridge Place. The houses are part of the modern housing estate that replaced the rows of miners' cottages in the 1960s or thereabout. West Lothian County Council's architects seem to have favoured 'half-houses' with a single pitched roof instead of the traditional double pitched roof. I have noticed them in several places around the county.
