In the suburbs between Corstorphine Hill and Queensferry Road. The traffic cones have been placed to clear parking in advance of road works. The sign refers to a care home further down the road; I feel that 'elderly' can only mean someone older than you are.

The view of Craigcrook Road. The entrance to Craigcrook Castle is just beyond the bus stop. However at the time that this photograph was taken the gates were shut and secured with a chain and padlock.

In the entry for Craigcrook in 'The Fortified House In Scotland', Nigel Tranter writes, "The windows of the main block have been enlarged, and of course the balustraded outside stair to the first floor is also a later refinement. All outside stone stairs are an obvious negation of a defensive system."

A 17th-century castle which has undergone much alteration and relatively recent renovation. Among its many owners have been the publisher Archibald Constable and the Liberal judge, Francis Jeffrey, whose home it was for thirty-five years. The rear view from the 17thC walled south garden. The building followed a Z-arrangement, comprising the main block flanked by a projecting round tower to the south west and a square stair-tower to the north-east, the latter, containing the original entrance, is now encased in later rebuilding. Access to the upper stories was by turret stairs. Many of the alterations were carried out by William Playfair.
