Robert Louis Stevenson's childhood home, Heriot Row
The sickly young Stevenson spent much of his childhood confined to this house where his imagination took him to The Land of Counterpane http://mediainformatics.biz/kidsbook/land.html and where he stared out of the window each night in the hope of catching sight of the leerie on his evening round. When he ventured out more in later life, he much preferred ferreting around the sleazy hovels of the Old Town to strolling through the "draughty parallelograms" of the New Town.

Robert Louis Stevenson's lamp, Heriot Row
The plaque below the lamp displays lines from Stevenson's children's poem 'The Lamplighter' which contains the verses:
My tea is nearly ready and the sun has left the sky.
It's time to take the window to see Leerie going by;
For every night at teatime and before you take your seat,
With lantern and with ladder he comes posting up the street.
