Thomas Chalmers Church Centre, Kirkliston

Thomas Chalmers Church Centre
This started out as a Free Kirk, built in 1843, just after the Great Disruption of the Church of Scotland, when many congregations broke away to form the Free Church of Scotland. The spire was added in 1880; the architect of this was Hippolyte Jean Blanc. It is no longer in use as a church, but has been taken over as the church hall. I have attended Hogmanay dances there, where (a modest amount of) alcohol was available. The original congregation must be birling in their graves at such desecration.

The Square
Traditional stone houses, embellished by the addition of bay windows. The square is full of parked cars because Palm Sunday morning service is being held in the kirk behind it.

Kirkliston Parish Kirk
The oldest parts of the kirk are Romanesque and can be dated to the 12th century, though it has been much altered since then. The projecting wing nearest the camera is the Stair Aisle, where members of the Dalrymple family, Earls of Stair, are interred. The main Image] is the most significant part of the building.

Kirkliston Parish Kirk
The west end of the kirk, on the left in this view, is the oldest. The style of buttress and the small size of the lancets in the tower date it to the late 12th century. The main Image] is the most significant part of the building.

The South Doorway
Long ago built up, this Romanesque arch is the finest feature of the kirk, though it is sadly in poor repair. The arch incorporates four orders, mouldings and chevrons alternating, and the pillars have foliage capitals. It would originally have had more masonry projecting above it.

Model of the Kirk
My guide book drew my attention to this model showing the kirk as it was in the 1820s, and the Minister was kind enough to allow me to go in and take a couple of photographs. This is the south elevation of the model, showing how the great south door once extended some way out from the wall. Compare Image
