Carlops High Street
The A702 looking north (i.e. towards Edinburgh). The village itself was started in 1784 by a local land owner as a community of cotton weavers. The cottages on either side would have originally housed the looms. However, farms and religious communities have existed here since medieval, indeed Roman, times. A former Roman road runs parallel to the A702, to the west (left). The village name is said to derive from words meaning 'witch's leap' or 'Carlin's Loup' in Scots.

Inn sign, Allan Ramsay Hotel Carlops
Commemoration of the 18th century poet and playwright who set his pastoral comedy 'The Gentle Shepherd' in this area. The portrait appears to have been based on that painted in 1722 by William Aikman - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_Ramsay_(poet).

Carlops Drinking Fountain
A fine example of a mid 19th century well and drinking fountain, notable for its well-detailed carving with distinctive curved alcove flanked by swept, coped walls surmounted by finials. Prominently located beside the road, the structure adds considerably to the interest of the village streetscape. The structure was donated by the Browns of nearby Newhall House which is located nearby in Penicuik Parish.

Roadside drinking fountain, Carlops
A spring outlet in a decorative stone surround, though the thirsty traveller had better keep an eye on the traffic on the A702. Compare with Mike Richardson's photograph Image taken in 2008.
