The A702 looking north (i.e. towards Edinburgh). The village itself was started in 1784 by a local land owner as a community of cotton weavers. The cottages on either side would have originally housed the looms. However, farms and religious communities have existed here since medieval, indeed Roman, times. A former Roman road runs parallel to the A702, to the west (left). The village name is said to derive from words meaning 'witch's leap' or 'Carlin's Loup' in Scots.
