Craigiebield House Hotel
Craigiebield House was built as a private dwelling in 1885 for Professor James Cossar Ewart. For some years in the middle of the twentieth century it was used as the offices of Penicuik Burgh Council. Since then it has been an hotel and has been considerably extended, with a restaurant in the conservatory seen on the right and a function room and further bedrooms to the rear.

Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Penicuik
The old church was built as a chapel school in 1882 to serve the new parish established in that year. The curved roof of the new extension built in 1982 is of an unusual and striking parabolic-hyperbolic design.

Houses on John Street
'The Buildings of Scotland' says that the Roman Catholic Sacred Heart Church off John Street 'stands back behind a stolid classical school of c 1850' and I am standing with my back to the church. This building is neither classical nor, in my opinion, mid-19th century. Studying the 19th century maps shows that I am probably standing on the site of the said school, viewing the rear of an older building. It's a pity the right-hand stair turret has been covered with dull grey roughcast; the original rubble construction is much more appealing.
