'The Buildings of Scotland' says that the Roman Catholic Sacred Heart Church off John Street 'stands back behind a stolid classical school of c 1850' and I am standing with my back to the church. This building is neither classical nor, in my opinion, mid-19th century. Studying the 19th century maps shows that I am probably standing on the site of the said school, viewing the rear of an older building. It's a pity the right-hand stair turret has been covered with dull grey roughcast; the original rubble construction is much more appealing.
