Park End
After all the sober 18th and 19th century buildings, this Category A Listed architectural extravaganza comes as a refreshing shock. It is by Frederick Thomas Pilkington (1832-1898) who also designed the South Church, just across the River North Esk. Just my luck to arrive there when much of the street elevation was obscured by parked vehicles, including a large bright yellow van.

Bridge Street, Penicuik
The striking house on the right is Parkend, also shown in Image, designed by the architect Frederick Pilkington (1832 - 98). The nearby South Kirk Image is to his design and is similarly distinctive. Pilkington was architect for a number of churches in Edinburgh and elsewhere.

Penicuik, Bridge Street
Penicuik is a town on the A701 midway between Edinburgh and Peebles. It lies on the west bank of the River North Esk, east of the Pentland Hills. The town's name, which is pronounced 'Pennycook', is derived from Pen Y Cog, meaning "Hill of the Cuckoo".
