The NLB was founded in 1786 and NB the ensign flown predates the Union with Ireland in 1801 and does NOT incorporate the Saint Patrick's flag which now overlies the Saint Andrew's flag in present day Union Flags.

Category A. Listing number LB30024. A Hunter Crawford, 1910-12. Imposing 3-storey and attic, 6-bay classical freemason's hall. Silvery-grey polished sandstone ashlar.

Sitting down seems more in order, actually. The pub occupies the former premises of the Union Bank of Scotland, designed by the architect David Bryce and built in the 1870s.

The Grand Lodge of Scotland, 96 George Street Edinburgh EH2 3DH. Grand Hall looking east. The present Freemasons' Hall was built during 1911 - 1912. It replaced an earlier building that had been on the site since 1858. The previous building was designed by the famous Scottish architect, David Bryce (who was a Freemason), but by the end of the century the building had become too small for the needs of Grand Lodge and it was decided to build a new larger home - the present building. The Grand Hall is the main meeting place of Grand Lodge. Regular Communications are held in February, June and October.

The original building designed by John Henderson and paid for by subscription opened in 1787. The Roman Doric portico and arcade was designed by William Burn and added in 1817-18. Burns' partner David Bryce was responsible the design of the Music Hall added to the rear in 1843. In recent years the building has been a central venue of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
