Former tollhouse
This single storey cottage on Lauder Road is noted on the OS 6" map 1852/53 as Newmills Turnpike. It is about 300m south east of Newmills Bridge over the River South Esk. It may once have had a front porch.

Maiden Bridge over the South Esk, Newbattle Abbey
The name of this mediaeval bridge is popularly believed to refer to James IV's bride-to-be, Margaret Tudor, who crossed it with her retinue in 1503 on her way to the 'Marriage of the Thistle and the Rose'. A more prosaic explanation may come from the fact that it stood in the grounds of the Cistercian abbey of Newbattle which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, hence the name.
