The name of this mediaeval bridge is popularly believed to refer to James IV's bride-to-be, Margaret Tudor, who crossed it with her retinue in 1503 on her way to the 'Marriage of the Thistle and the Rose'. A more prosaic explanation may come from the fact that it stood in the grounds of the Cistercian abbey of Newbattle which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, hence the name.
