Coade Stone Pillars
These pillars were rescued from a garden in the area and set up here in a community garden in 2006. They are made from Coade stone, an artificial stone invented and manufactured by Mrs Eleanor Coade (1773-1821). This is smooth grained and impervious to atmospheric pollution retaining its fresh appearance.
The design on the smaller pillars is identical to those on the chimneys of Dalmeny House, South Queensferry, seat of the Earl of Rosebery.

St Philip's Church, Joppa
The church, built in 1877, suffered major fire damage to the roof and interior in 1998, but has since been restored. On 16th October 1939, the Luftwaffe, attempting to bomb the Forth Bridge its first daylight air raid on Britain, caused damage to houses in nearby Morton Street, including that of the Lord Provost, Henry Steele. Two of the German aircrew shot down during the raid were buried in Piershill Cemetery after a service in the church. They were the first enemy casualties of the war to be buried on British soil. Details of the attack can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forth_Railway_Bridge

Groomed beach at Portobello
Easter Sunday afternoon - not a lot of activity, no doubt a result of the weather; it was cold, windy, heavy-showery, with the occasional bright period. The tower block is Coillesdene House at Joppa
Image, a 1960's[?] contrast to the elegant earlier houses.
