The church, built in 1877, suffered major fire damage to the roof and interior in 1998, but has since been restored. On 16th October 1939, the Luftwaffe, attempting to bomb the Forth Bridge its first daylight air raid on Britain, caused damage to houses in nearby Morton Street, including that of the Lord Provost, Henry Steele. Two of the German aircrew shot down during the raid were buried in Piershill Cemetery after a service in the church. They were the first enemy casualties of the war to be buried on British soil.
