Murals in Colinton Tunnel
The tunnel was part of the branch line to Balerno, and now part of the Water of Leith Walkway. The inside of the tunnel is decorated with colourful murals including the poem 'From a Railway Carriage' by Robert Louis Stevenson. Some of the murals are painted on sheets of wood attached to the sides of the tunnel. Damp is a persistent problem, and the upkeep of the tunnel costs £750o a year. The tunnel is looked after by a voluntary organisation. See https://www.colintontunnel.org.uk/ for details.

Colinton Tunnel
The very well decorated former railway tunnel. Last time I visited it was not lit so seeing it other than through flash photography was an experience.

Inside Colinton Tunnel
This used to be a railway tunnel on the Balerno branch line. Now it serves the Water of Leith Walkway. The tunnel is lit by yellow sodium lights, making it hard to show the colours accurately in a photograph. This picture is a compromise between the harsh yellow seen by the eye on entering the tunnel, and a fully colour corrected interpretation that would show the graffiti on the right as pure white.
