Site of James Gillespies' shop, High Street
Commemorative tablet on the former tobacconist's shop of James Gillespie who owned a snuff mill in Colinton Dell and bequeathed funds to found "a Hospital for the Maintenance of Aged Men and Women, and a Free School for the Education of Poor Boys". The shop is now a busy Italian restaurant.

Heritage Trail relic in the High Street
The plaque is on the building which Dr. Elsie Inglis opened in 1904 as a maternity Hospice for poor women in the Old Town of Edinburgh. It is on the north side of the High Street, opposite St. Giles. I assume the plaque dates from the 1920s (or 1930s), when she was very much in the nation's consciousness because of the contribution she and her nurses made in Serbia and Russia in the Great War.

Dr. Elsie Inglis plaque in the High Street
A medallion commemorating Dr. Elsie Inglis, Scotland's greatest heroine of the Great War. It is on the facade of the Hospice she opened in the High Street in 1904 to assist poor women during pregnancy and confinement. It amalgamated with the Bruntsfield Hospital in 1910. Her name, though not of course her reputation, was unfortunately tarnished by association when the privately-run Elsie Inglis Nursing Home, in the former maternity hospital named after her, was closed down by the authorities in the summer of 2011 because of patient neglect.
