Under the heart of London: southward from City Thameslink station
View - 'down the side of a house' - towards Blackfriars etc. on the northbound platform of this very modern station underneath all the streets and offices, built 29/5/90 in place of Ludgate Hill station (cf.

South on Fleet Place, City of London
Fleet Place felt like a disorienting and claustrophobic space, dominated by overbearing office towers, blocks and slabs. It is a confined pedestrian precinct leading south from Holborn Viaduct. It sits partly above City Thameslink London Overground station, signed on the right.
The occasion was to attend a three-hour training workshop for charity trustees.

Ludgate Hill Station (remains), with RCTS Rail Tour
View northward, towards Holborn Viaduct, Snow Hill Tunnel and Farringdon; ex-London, Chatham & Dover and Metropolitan 'Widenend Lines' (MWL), cross - London route. The station had been closed since March 1929 and at the time of the photograph (1954) only cross-London freight trains and SR local trains to Holborn Viaduct passed there. Here on 10/10/53, the Railway Correspondence & Travel Society London Area Rail Tour has stopped briefly on its complex route, which included Battersea - Kentish Town via Blackfriars Bridge and the Snow Hill Tunnel, with ex-GN N1 0-6-2T No. 69441. The island platform of Ludgate Hill station was removed in 1974 and since 1990 the present City Thameslink Station has occupied the site.

Bear Alley off Farringdon Street
First mentioned by Leake in 1666, Stow tells us that the Market-house for meal stood there (1722). It was truncated in 1869 to make way for the Holborn Viaduct.
