Whitecross Street market: over for today
The market in Whitecross Street has packed up for the day. It dates back to medieval times and, being outside the City walls, was popular with itinerant pedlars and tinkers who were not allowed into the City where markets and prices were strictly controlled by the guilds.

Whitecross Street and St Luke's church
A regeneration scheme has resulted in a facelift for one of London's oldest markets with the aim of increasing the number of stalls and bringing fresh interest into the area. There is a specialist food markets on Thursdays and Fridays each week. In 1853 a genteel voyeur visited the market and recorded, in vivid but excoriating language, his shocked impressions of the 'revolting' spectacle of Sunday trading and low life here. See http://www.victorianlondon.org/publications/curiosities-26.htm St Luke's church visible on the other side of Old Street.
