A regeneration scheme has resulted in a facelift for one of London's oldest markets with the aim of increasing the number of stalls and bringing fresh interest into the area. There is a specialist food markets on Thursdays and Fridays each week. In 1853 a genteel voyeur visited the market and recorded, in vivid but excoriating language, his shocked impressions of the 'revolting' spectacle of Sunday trading and low life here.
