Falcon House, Finsbury
The smoke damage from a serious fire the previous Monday can clearly be seen on the wall of Falcon House, a tower block on Pickard Street, just off City Road. The fire broke out at about 2145 in a 5-bedroom 7th floor flat; over 60 firefighters were reported to have attended and the fire was brought under control within an hour. No lives were lost but one occupant of the flat was treated for burns and ten other people for smoke inhalation. The incident has boosted a campaign to save Clerkenwell Fire Station, which has been threatened with closure; fire appliances from Clerkenwell were first on the scene.

Remains of the (former) City Road tube station, City Road / Central Street / Moreland Street, EC1
City Road tube station was opened in 1901 when the City & South London Railway extended its service from Moorgate Street to Angel. The line, which later became part of the Northern Line, was upgraded by enlarging the diameter of the tunnels in the early 1920s. Owing to the proximity of Angel and Old Street stations, few passengers had been using City Road, so the enlargement of the platform tunnels could not be justified on financial grounds and the station was closed.
The street level building was largely demolished around 1970, leaving a small part of the southern end of the building incorporating the ventilation tower; access to the station is maintained as an emergency exit.
