Between Eastway and its confluence with the River Lee Navigation upstream, the river flows through a peaceful area (so far) untouched by urban development.

River Lea (or Lee) seen from Eastway
Here the river flows across Hackney Marshes, a window of rural tranquility bounded by main roads and densely populated suburbs, at least for now.

River Lea at A106 bridge
This appears to be closer to the old natural course of the river than parallel waterways around here - authority boundaries start following it just around the corner ahead.

River Lea seen from Ruckholt Road
The original River Lea flowed 70 miles from Leagrove Marsh near Luton to the River Thames at Bow Creek. The River Lee Act of 1766 provided for the construction of 15 new cuts to straighten the course of the river by eliminating loops which made it difficult to navigate. This is the River Lea, seen from the bridge carrying Ruckholt Road over the river. The Lee Navigation passes to the west here, beyond Hackney Marshes. Historically the river is spelled Lea while the navigation is Lee.
