Liverpool Street - Chingford local train at Bethnal Green, 1958
Having surmounted the 1-in-70 bank from Liverpool Street, the train is about to turn onto the Cambridge Lines; these were not electrified until 1960 and still have platforms at Bethnal Green. The locomotive is one of the initial 12 Hill ex-GER L77 class members of the very successful LNER class N7, which eventually numbered 122 engines. It is one of those which had a regular crew, from Wood Street and Enfield Town sub-sheds, and was kept in first-class condition with the distinctive white smoke-box rings. No. 69604 was built 9/21 as GER No. 1004, became LNER No. 8004, then 7982 in 1944 and 9604 in 1946, surviving as BR No. 69604 until 8/59. Note the disks employed on local trains from Liverpool St.

Chingford line local at Bethnal Green Junction, 1958
A scene shot on the same day and spot as Image This Chingford local from Liverpool Street has another early N7 but not burnished up: No. 69611 (built 11/21 as GER No. 1011) became LNER No. 8011, 7989 in 1944, 9611 in 1946, BR No. 69611 and withdrawn 11/60 - when the NE London suburban network was electrified.
