This used to be the only way through the middle of Higham Hill. Not any more. Waltham Forest Council implemented the first UN 'Mini Holland' project in Britain, which involved closing many roads and causing total chaos.

Carlton Road, Higham Hill
Higham Hill is some fifty feet or so above the Lea valley. This area represented the northern limit of Walthamstow's nineteenth century terraced housing whose development the opening of the railway to Chingford in the early 1870s did much to encourage.
