Stratford Park was originally called West Ham Lane Recreation Ground when it opened. It is located on the site of a former large house called "Senables" which stood here until the 18th century. West Ham Lane Recreation Ground opened in stages between 1899 and 1912 as the Borough Council acquired parcels of land for its new park. Many of the park's original features remain including the ornamental fountain, mature London plane trees, cast iron boundary railings and entrances. The park was renamed Stratford Park in 1998.

This circular fountain is part of the gardens of the recreational ground. On the right, are temporary buildings set up for Newham Live. A council sponsored space to watch the Olympics and Paralympics via wide screen TVs. Also sports related activities will be available at the weekends.
