"The Grapes", Limehouse
A historic pub in Narrow St, Limehouse, The Grapes is currently part owned by actor Sir Ian McKellen. The famous staff used by Sir Ian as Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings" films is displayed behind the bar. For a donation in a charity box, customers can have their photo taken with it. The pub is also the setting for the opening chapter of "Our Mutual Friend" by Charles Dickens in which it is described as "A tavern of dropsical appearance... long settled down into a state of hale infirmity. It had outlasted many a sprucer public house, indeed the whole house impended over the water but seemed to have got into the condition of a faint-hearted. diver, who has paused so long on the brink that he will never go in at all."
