Whitechapel bell foundry in Plumbers Row
The foundry was established in 1570 (or possibly before)- Britain's oldest manufacturing company - and it has occupied this site since 1758. Part of the building dates back to 1670, and was originally an inn named The Artichoke.

Whitechapel Bell Foundry
The Foundry buildings date from 1670, four years after the Great Fire of London. Originally built as a coaching inn called the Artichoke, the lease of the buildings was acquired by Thomas Lester - then Master Founder at Whitechapel - to accommodate the need for extra workshops and space during a time of great expansion in the craft of bellfounding. The business moved there from the north side of Whitechapel Road. The premises are now designated as Grade II listed buildings. http://www.whitechapelbellfoundry.co.uk/history.htm

Bells at the bell foundry
Whitechapel is one of only two functioning foundries remaining in the UK, the other being at Loughborough. It's still a family firm and an interesting place to visit, see http://www.whitechapelbellfoundry.co.uk/
