Looking north-west near the summit of Wrens Nest Hill. The Silurian limestone contains a huge variety of fossils, including corals and the famous "Dudley Bug" trilobite, Calymene blumenbachii.

Silurian (Wenlock) Limestone, Dudley, Worcestershire
Over 400 million years ago, tropical seas covered the area where Dudley now stands. Coral reefs were inhabited by trilobites, crinoids (sea lilies), brachiopods and many other creatures, and the strata here at Wren's Nest Nature Reserve are crammed with fossils. Limestone exposure in Wren's Nest Nature Reserve near Dudley
Looking north near the summit of Wren's Nest Hill. The Silurian limestone contains a huge variety of fossils, including corals and the famous "Dudley Bug" trilobite, Calymene blumenbachii. Many people come here to search for fossils. Hammers are forbidden, as is breaking away rocks from the rockface. Searching through fallen rocks and other debris is allowed.

This shows another detail, about 50cm in width, of the exposure shown in image Image The Silurian Limestone here at Wren's Nest was quarried for several centuries for building stone, fertiliser and as a flux for ironstone.
